Police have recovered the body of a young man named Md Maruf, 21, from the bank of a pond in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali, a day after he left home in a huff.
The body was sent to the morgue of 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for post-mortem examination on Thursday (8 October) morning. Earlier, the body was recovered at around 10pm on Wednesday from the bank of a pond beside Haji Bari in Motoin Dakshinpara of Domurua union in the upazila.
The deceased Maruf was the son of Md Ripon of that area.
Police and local sources said that on Tuesday night Maruf, upset with his family members, smashed his own mobile phone. He later left the house with his clothes in a travel bag. He did not return home after that. Family members and relatives searched for him in various places but could not find him.
On Wednesday night, local people informed the police after seeing Maruf’s body lying with a gamchha wrapped around his neck on the bank of a pond adjoining a paddy field beside the house. Senbagh Police Station police recovered the body from the spot. The travel bag he used and his shoes were also recovered from near the spot.
Md Hazrat Ali Milon, officer-in-charge (OC) of Senbagh Police Station, said that on receiving the information police went to the spot and found the body, with a gamchha tied around the neck, lying between the pond bank and the paddy field. One part of the gamchha was tied to the branch of a tree on the pond bank, and the other part was wrapped around the neck of the body. It is initially assumed that, as the gamchha was old, he may have fallen into the paddy field after it tore. The young man took his own life by hanging. An unnatural death (UD) case has been recorded over the incident. Further legal action will be taken after the post-mortem report is received.
