The Department of Fisheries’ decision to cancel 103 no-objection certificates for hilsa import has come into effect. As a result, hilsa import from India to Bangladesh has stopped.
The 103 no-objection certificates were cancelled on 22 September in a letter signed by Dr Md Khaled Konok, acting director general of the Department of Fisheries. Since then, the process of importing hilsa from India has remained halted.
Ziaur Rahman Zia, general secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, confirmed the matter to the media.
He said a letter from the Department of Fisheries has reached us. Many no-objection certificates have been cancelled in it. Because of this decision, hilsa import remains halted and importers have fallen into trouble.
Hilsa importer Syed Mahidul Haque Rubai said we have faced a big loss as imports have suddenly stopped.
He said the hilsa bought for import had been kept on the other side of the border. Now those will have to be returned at a lower price. Besides this, there is of course the loss of import costs.
