Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said a separate ‘Cyber Security Unit’ will be formed next week to enhance the capacity of the police in tackling cybercrime.
He made the announcement on Saturday in his speech as the chief guest at the ‘Police Medal Awarding Ceremony’ organised on the occasion of Police Week 2026.
The home minister said an officer of the rank of additional inspector general of police (additional IGP) will lead the new unit. If there is no such post at the Police Headquarters, it will be newly created.
He said the Cyber Security Unit will have branches at the metro, divisional and district levels. There will be modern equipment at the thana and district levels. And large-scale forensic labs and other necessary support will be kept at the headquarters and divisional levels.
The minister further said the directive to formulate a project was given several weeks ago. Complex cases will come to the centre; those that can be analysed at the thana, district and divisional levels will be completed there.
Salahuddin Ahmed said crimes committed centring on the cyber world are a feature of modern crime trends. Pointing out that in some countries up to 44 per cent of total crimes are cyber or fraud-based, he said this is why the matter has to be given importance.
At the ceremony, the home minister put PPM and BPM medals on 98 police personnel.
Home Ministry Senior Secretary Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir and senior police officials were present at the time.
