A convoy carrying uranium has set off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant under the strict security of the army. This fuel brought for the first unit is being taken to Rooppur on three lorries.
The convoy began its journey at around 7:15am on Saturday (3 October). Alongside the army, members of SRB, police and various intelligence agencies are in charge of security.
Earlier, the aircraft carrying the fuel for the first unit landed at Shahjalal airport at around 11:30pm on Friday (2 October). Later, officials of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority received the consignment.
An additional 48 uranium assemblies for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and 163 for the second unit will arrive in the country on 9 flights by the coming November-December. This consignment is supposed to come to the country from Russia via Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
Earlier, although the uranium was supposed to arrive on 24 September, it could not come in the end as there were complications over the use of Pakistan’s airspace. Even before that, the fuel for the first unit of Rooppur had arrived in 2023, which was loaded into the nuclear reactor in May this year.
