The bail petition of Jamaat leader, former MP and freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has been rejected again. The petition was filed in the case over allegations of obstructing government work and misbehaving with officials at Shahjalal International Airport.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court rejected the petition on Monday (26 October).
His bail petition in the same case had earlier been turned down on 4 October as well. That day, when he was produced before the court after a one-day remand, his lawyer sought bail. After the hearing, the court rejected the petition and ordered him sent to jail.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on 2 October. He was accused of creating disorder in a situation that arose over luggage and trolleys at the airport, obstructing government work and physically assaulting an on-duty security officer. Airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case with Airport police station.
The case statement says 34 representatives of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami returned to Dhaka from Madinah with their families on 1 October. Their flight landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:55am that day and was parked at around 9:08am. The passengers entered the terminal through Gate 21 of the airport and completed immigration. They then went to the area of luggage belt 8 to collect their baggage.
The case statement further claims that a temporary shortage of trolleys arose because of the heavy rush of arriving passengers at the time. A long queue formed for trolleys, and some protocol assistants tried to take trolleys by breaking the queue. Meanwhile, the delay in luggage arriving and the non-arrival of Zamzam water left some of the passengers concerned agitated, and they started behaving indecently. According to the allegations in the case, this led to disorder at the airport.
