The court has ordered former law minister Anisul Huq and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to be sent to jail after the end of their three-day remand for interrogation. They had been taken on remand in a case filed over the killing of a young man named Jihad Hossain (22) in Jatrabari in the capital during the July movement of 2024.
When the remand expired on Wednesday, police produced the two before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. The investigation officer of the case applied for them to be kept in jail until the investigation is completed. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque ordered both to be sent to jail.
The news was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Main Uddin, an officer of the General Registration (GR) section of Jatrabari Police Station at the court. According to him, a three-day remand for the two was granted on 25 February 2025. But because several cases against them were pending at the International Crimes Tribunal, the investigation officer could not take them on remand at the time. When he applied to the court on 14 October seeking permission to execute the remand, the court asked for it to be carried out within 10 working days. The investigation officer then took the two on remand for interrogation on Sunday, and they were produced in court today after it expired.
According to the case statement, Jihad Hossain joined the movement under the Shonir Akhra foot overbridge in the capital on 19 July 2024. He was shot there. He was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The victim’s father, Nurul Amin Mollah, filed a case over the incident on 3 September 2024, naming 85 people including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
