Eight people, including seven of the same family, have died after a car was swept away by the force of floodwater in Agar Malwa district of India’s Madhya Pradesh. The accident occurred near the Baglamukhi temple in the Nalkheda police station area on Saturday (19 September).
Police said the deceased were residents of Jayadev Vihar in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. They had gone to Madhya Pradesh on a pilgrimage. Their car was swept away by the current of water on the way to another temple after visiting the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain.
Seven of the eight dead are members of the same family. The other is the driver of the car, who worked at a local travel agency.
According to police, about four inches of rain fell in the area in the past 24 hours. This caused the water level to rise rapidly and created a strong current, and it was in that current that the car was swept away.
On receiving the news, Nalkheda thana police conducted a rescue operation and recovered the bodies of the eight. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination.
