Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman has called upon the law enforcement agencies to take effective measures to maintain security and comfort during Sharadiya Durga Puja. He said the leaders and activists of his party would also play a responsible role from their own position in ensuring security for the puja.
He said this in a statement sent to the media on Thursday night.
In the statement, Shafiqur Rahman said, ‘This beloved Bangladesh of ours, of 55,000 square miles, is a shining example of communal harmony. Here, from long ago, we the people of all communities have been observing religious rites, rituals and festivals in our own ways without hindrance. I express the hope that during Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindu community, all the people of this community will observe their festival with full security.’
The Leader of the Opposition said, ‘In the light of our fine traditions of the past, I call upon the government and the law enforcement agencies concerned to take effective measures to ensure that the people of the Hindu community can celebrate their puja with full security and comfort this time as well.’
Shafiqur Rahman further said, ‘Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, as the main opposition party in the national parliament and a people-friendly organisation, will also play a responsible role from its own position. People of various religions live in this country of ours. They will practise their own religions freely. As conscious citizens of the country, the leaders and activists of Jamaat will maintain social responsibility towards people of all religions, including the Hindu community, and will extend a hand of cooperation.’
