Police have recovered Tk 3 lakh belonging to cricketer SM Meherab Hasan, which was stolen from a covered van of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Rajshahi district police spokesperson Additional Superintendent of Police Sabina Yasmin confirmed the information in a press release on Friday evening.
Mozammel Haque, one of the four people arrested over the theft, said the Tk 3 lakh taken from the stolen luggage was at his rented house. A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police then recovered the money from the drawer of a dressing table at his rented house at Kazla Mridhapara in Rajshahi city.
After the National Cricket League ended, the divisional cricket team returned to Rajshahi from Dhaka last Wednesday and their 54 pieces of luggage were sent by covered van. While unloading the goods from the van in the morning, eight pieces of luggage were found missing. Meherab Hasan lodged a general diary at the police station over the matter.
Conducting a drive early yesterday morning, police arrested four people. They had boarded the moving covered van by motorcycle in the Puthia area of Rajshahi, broken the lock of the door and taken down eight pieces of luggage. Police recovered the luggage as well; other goods were found in it, but the money was not.
After a case was filed over the matter, the accused were sent to jail through the court the same day. One accused, Rubel Ahmed, 38, gave a confessional statement in court. Efforts are under way to arrest the other accused involved with this gang, police official Sabina Yasmin said.
