The West Indies cricket team have not been able to win another bilateral ODI series on Indian soil since 2002.
West Indies coach Daren Sammy wants to end that 24-year drought and win the upcoming three-match ODI series against India.
He said, ‘We have come on this tour of India with the aim of winning the series. We want to end the barren run of not being able to win an ODI series for 24 years.’
West Indies last won a series on Indian soil in 2002, when they won the seven-match series 4-3. Since then, the Caribbean side have played seven ODI series in India and lost every one of them.
West Indies played their last ODI series on Indian soil in 2022. They were whitewashed in that three-match series.
Sammy wants to wipe out that past record on this tour. He said, ‘We have not won any series in India for 24 years. So this tour of India is a big challenge for us. I believe the players of the current team have the ability to handle any challenge. I hope this team will be able to win the ODI series on Indian soil this time.’
Sammy does not see the Indian conditions as any problem. In his view, everyone in the current West Indies team has experience of playing in Indian conditions.
Sammy said, ‘Most of the players in this team have played in the IPL. They have a good idea of Indian conditions. So we are not too worried about the conditions. Success will come if we can produce our best performance in all three departments.’
West Indies will begin the three-match ODI series on Indian soil on 27 September.
