The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has recovered 80 gold bars hidden in a special manner inside the shoes of two airline crew members at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The total weight of the recovered gold is about 9.34 kilograms, with an estimated market value of Tk 16.25 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate took position at Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday (4 October). At that time, two crew members of Emirates Airlines flight EK-0582, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai, were identified as suspicious. Later, when their shoes were searched on the airport runway, gold bars hidden inside with a special technique were found. A total of 80 gold bars were recovered from the two crew members, each weighing about 117 grams.
Customs intelligence sources said that instead of being carried in the usual way, the gold had been brought in hidden with a special technique inside the crew members’ shoes. Questioning of those concerned and preliminary verification have begun over the incident.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate is looking into who this gold brought from Dubai was supposed to reach through the crew members, whether anyone else is involved with it and how the gold was brought past the airport security system.
The process of taking legal action over the recovered gold is under way.
