Awami League activist Sultan Hossain has been accused of pouring boiling hot water on the body of Chhatra Dal leader Hasanuzzaman in Chuadanga. Three people, including Hasanuzzaman and two others named Sirajul Islam, 42, and Hasan Mia, 32, suffered burns in the incident. The injured are undergoing treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
The incident took place at Jamal’s tea stall at Pukurpara intersection in Shankarchandra union of Chuadanga Sadar upazila at around 11:00pm on Saturday (3 October).
The burnt Chhatra Dal leader Hasanuzzaman is the son of Sirajul Islam of Shankarchandra village and joint general secretary of the district Chhatra Dal. The accused Sultan is the son of Attab Hossain, president of the ward 1 Awami League.
Hasanuzzaman, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital, alleged that while he was sitting at a tea stall in Pukurpara on Saturday night, Awami League activist Sultan made objectionable remarks about the BNP and the local party leadership and about offering prayers at the mosque. When he protested, Sultan, out of political vengeance, poured the boiling hot water from the stall’s kettle on his body and fled. At the time, when Sirajul Islam and Hasan, who were nearby, came forward to protect him, their bodies were also burnt by the hot water.
However, no comment from the accused Sultan could be obtained on the matter as he is absconding.
Meanwhile, district Jubo Dal President Sharif Ur Zaman Sizar condemned the incident and demanded that the accused Sultan be quickly arrested and brought to book.
According to hospital sources, different parts of the bodies of the three burn victims have been scalded. They are being given treatment under close observation.
Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Himel Rana said action will be taken after investigation if a complaint is received.
