Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain has termed farmers the main driving force of the country’s economic prosperity.

He said keeping agricultural production running by providing government support to insolvent farmers is one of the government’s goals.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a programme organised by the upazila administration and the upazila social services office at the Birampur Upazila Parishad auditorium in Dinajpur on Thursday evening.

At the programme, sewing machines were given to 20 women and two bundles of corrugated iron sheets each to 25 homeless poor families with ADP funding. Cheques of financial assistance were handed over to 92 destitute, helpless, disabled and homeless people under various programmes of the Ministry of Social Welfare.

Besides, cheques of education assistance were given to 126 destitute and meritorious students and annual grants to 23 religious institutions. At the same event, with the support of the district Department of Agricultural Extension, vegetable seeds and 10 kilograms of chemical fertiliser each were distributed among 840 farmers of the upazila.

The minister said the government is working to build an inclusive and humane Bangladesh, leaving no one in society behind. Standing beside the helpless, the destitute, the disabled and meritorious students is the government’s constitutional commitment. To this end, the scope of social safety net programmes is being expanded further.

He said this assistance is being given to promote self-employment for women, encourage poor students in their studies, create housing opportunities for the homeless and strengthen the activities of social and religious institutions. He also said such programmes would continue.

With Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mst Tanzina Khatun in the chair, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Birampur Circle Md Harez Uddin, upazila BNP President Mia Md Shafiqul Islam Mamun and General Secretary Md Monjurul Islam Rubel, along with government officials, public representatives, political leaders and beneficiaries, were present at the programme.
