Photo: Collected
Meaning of the verses
And for him who fears standing before Allah, there are two gardens. So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? Both have many spreading branches.
So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? In both gardens are two flowing springs…. There they will recline on couches lined with thick silk, and the fruits of the two gardens will be near at hand. So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? (Surah Ar-Rahman, verses 46-55)
These verses describe the reward that the God-fearing will receive in the hereafter.
Lessons and rulings
1. Doing good deeds in the hope of reward and shunning sin out of fear of Allah’s punishment: this is the essence of the fear of Allah.
2. The God-fearing will be given two paradises, or gardens, in the hereafter: one in return for their good deeds, and the other in return for shunning sin.
3. The paradise that will be given to the God-fearing will be adorned with a variety of fruits and blessings. Their blessings, too, will be double.
4. In paradise, the seats of its dwellers will resemble thrones, and they will be made of fine, soft silk.
5. The seats of the dwellers of paradise will be placed in the fruit gardens in such a way that they can eat the fruit sitting if they wish, or eat it standing if they wish. (Tafsir as-Sadi, pages 46-55)
