The Bangladesh Navy has seized 7,14,870 metres of illegal current nets and 22 other nets in a drive in Chandpur. The drive was carried out on Sunday at various river estuaries and canals in the district to protect the breeding and reproduction of mother hilsa. The market value of the seized nets is estimated at Tk 6,99,86,900.
Navy sources said the drive was conducted at various places in Chandpur, including Anandabazar, Dashadi canal, Shahar Mali, Lalpur, No. 3 Koylaghat, Chandpur Mohona, Gazirtek, Miar Bazar, Kanudi and Amirabad. The seized nets were later burnt and destroyed in line with the rules; the local administration and fisheries officials were present at the time.
Lieutenant Commander Fayiz Kafi, commander of the Chandpur Navy contingent, said the Navy’s drive would continue in order to protect the country’s fisheries resources, stop illegal fishing and ensure the breeding of mother hilsa. Regular monitoring is under way against those who are defying the ban.
It may be noted that a 22-day countrywide mother hilsa conservation drive to ensure the safe breeding of hilsa began on 8 October and will continue until 29 October. During this period, the catching, transport, storage, buying and selling, and marketing of hilsa are completely banned.
