An awareness workshop was held at Bashundhara Public School and College in the capital on Monday, organised by the Dhaka Metro-4 Circle of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). It aimed to prevent road accidents and make students more aware of using roads safely.
The event was organised as part of a month-long programme marking National Road Safety Day-2026.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Safe roads for a prosperous country, Bangladesh before all’. Students were taught how to cross roads safely, how to use footpaths and zebra crossings properly, what to do as public transport passengers, and what the duties and responsibilities of drivers and pedestrians are.
Speakers said that drivers’ awareness alone is not enough to reduce accidents; passengers and pedestrians must also be responsible. They stressed obeying traffic laws, ensuring safe road management and fostering mutual respect among all road users.
According to the speakers, road safety is not merely a question of building infrastructure or enforcing laws, but the collective result of everyone’s awareness and responsible behaviour. The students who are aware today will be the responsible citizens of tomorrow. They therefore believe that if knowledge of and a sense of responsibility for road safety can be built among students, positive change in preventing accidents is possible.
Transport analyst Partha Sarathi Das, executive director of Road Safety Alliance Bangladesh, spoke at the workshop on the safe use of roads and awareness. Md Kamal Uddin, a police inspector of the Gulshan Traffic Division, spoke on traffic signs and signals.
Tanmoy Kumar Dhar, assistant director (engineering) of BRTA’s Dhaka Metro-4 Circle, and Prof Md Jahangir Alam, acting principal of Bashundhara Public School and College, also spoke on why road safety matters, why accidents happen and how to prevent them.
Students also shared their thoughts and opinions on road safety at the workshop. In addition, BRTA distributed awareness leaflets and screened videos on road safety.
