The district police’s series of drives against teen gangs in Cumilla is continuing. Most recently, police detained another 363 people in simultaneous drives in the district’s 18 thanas from Friday evening until late at night. With this, a total of 2,035 people have been detained in five phases of drives.
Earlier, 624 people were detained in the first phase, 254 in the second phase, 415 in the third phase and 379 in the fourth phase. With the latest 363, the number of detentions in five phases stands at 2,035.
In the latest drive, police also arrested Ratan, the head of the Ratan Group and the prime accused in the Shahadat murder case, over the killing that took place in 2022 in front of the Missionary School in Cumilla city centring on the establishment of supremacy between two teen gang groups.
Police said there are multiple cases against Ratan on arms and other charges, including the Shahadat murder case, and he had been under police surveillance for a long time.
In 2022, a clash took place in front of the Missionary School between the teen gangs ‘Eagle Group’ and ‘Ratan Group’ over establishing supremacy. Shahadat was killed in that incident and Ratan was made the prime accused in the murder case filed later.
The drives were conducted at places troubled by miscreants, crime-prone areas and hangout spots in various thana areas, including Cumilla city.
Police said the involvement of the detainees in crime is being verified and, after the verification, necessary legal action is being taken against them.
