Two girls who were cousins have died after drowning in an abandoned pond while playing beside their house in Pakundia, Kishoreganj. The incident took place at Anwarkhali village in the municipal headquarters at around 9:00am on Saturday (3 October).
The dead children are Nusaiba, 2, daughter of Siddique Hossain of Anwarkhali village, and Adiba, 3, daughter of his sister Mariam.
Local sources said Nusaiba and Adiba were playing beside the house in the morning. At one stage, unnoticed by family members, they fell into an abandoned pond next to the house. A while later, family members spotted this and quickly rescued them.
The two were later taken to Pakundia Upazila Health Complex. After examination, the on-duty doctor of the hospital declared the two children dead.
Dr Tawhid, resident medical officer (RMO) of Pakundia Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the deaths of the two children by drowning. He said the two children had died before they were brought to the hospital.
