On one side, training at the national team camp and preparing for international competitions; on the other, the Higher Secondary examinations. Fighting these two battles, on the field and in the classroom, at the same time, several of the country’s athletes have also succeeded in their exam results. Among them are hockey’s twin sisters Himadri and Niladri Barua, football goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon and table tennis player Khoi Khoi Sai Marma.
Of the twin sisters, Himadri obtained GPA-5, while Niladri’s result was GPA 4.83. Both members of the national women’s hockey team are students of BKSP. Being at the national team camp before the exams, they could not give their studies as much time as they should have. So they did not expect too much from the results. In the end, both are happy to have got good results.
Niladri said, ‘Because of practising properly, I couldn’t sit the exams that well. I didn’t expect much, but I still feel good seeing the result.’
The two sisters want to continue their studies alongside hockey. Himadri said, ‘It feels good. I want to get admitted to a good university in Dhaka.’
Six of the seven players from BKSP’s hockey department who got chances in national teams have passed this time. One of them is table tennis player Khoi Khoi Sai Marma, who obtained GPA 4.67 in science. Unable to take part in selection because of the exams, she also missed playing two major competitions. Still, Khoi Khoi is satisfied with the result.
Khoi Khoi said, ‘It really was hard to manage both at the same time. Because of the exams I couldn’t go for selection, which is why I missed two big games. Still, the result was unexpected; I feel very good.’
She now wants to study at Dhaka University. Four more players of the junior national table tennis team, Reshmi Tanchangya, Oishi Rahman, Nafis Iqbal and Abul Hashem Hasib, have passed the HSC.
Two football goalkeepers have also done well. Sitting the exam under the Bangladesh Technical Education Board, national team goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon obtained GPA 4.71 including the optional subject. Under-20 national team goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin obtained GPA 4.25 in humanities.
National women’s cricket team pacer Marufa Akter has passed this time with a B. Having failed in one subject last year, she sat the exam again this year as an irregular examinee.
