West Indies now need 170 runs to win the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Riding on a superb half-century from Nayeem Hasan, Bangladesh were bowled out for 142 in their second innings.
With considerable turn and bounce in the pitch, chasing this target in the fourth innings is considered difficult for any side.
Bangladesh began the fourth day’s play on the previous day’s 79 for 6 with a lead of 106 runs. Riding on all-rounder Nayeem’s batting, the hosts were able to add another 64 runs. The team’s highest score of 52 came from his bat. Bangladesh’s second innings finally ended on 142.
Jaker Ali Anik, who had been unbeaten with Nayeem yesterday, was out for 22 in the first over of the day. This handed complete control of the match to West Indies.
Even against the excellent spin of Jomel Warrican and Roston Chase, Nayeem batted skilfully with the tail-enders, giving the side a lead of more than 150 runs.
Chase had dropped Nayeem on 29. Showing patience and resolve on a difficult pitch, he completed his maiden Test half-century off 87 balls, reaching the milestone by pushing Warrican to midwicket for a single.
In the end, Nayeem fell to Chase. Chase also brought Bangladesh’s innings to a close when Nayeem was caught at long-on.
Chase finished the innings with 5 for 36. Warrican, who took 5 for 53 in the first innings, took 4 for 63 in the second.
In reply, West Indies reached 8 without loss before lunch.
