A campus cleanliness drive has been held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) with the aim of preventing dengue and raising public awareness.
The initiative has been taken as part of the three-month programme announced by the government with the aim of creating public awareness to prevent dengue across the country and keeping the environment clean.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Khairul Islam inaugurated the programme on the university campus at 9:00am on Sunday (4 October).
At the time he said prevention is better than cure. As part of the three-month dengue prevention programme announced by the prime minister, we have taken up this cleanliness activity at SUST. Our goal is to build a clean, healthy and safe campus so that we can all remain free from overall health risks including dengue.
Mentioning the vast size of the campus, he said that in the initial phase more than 70 outside workers have been brought in to carry out the activities in order to complete the cleaning work quickly, and the campus has been divided into six zones. However, teachers, students, officers and employees themselves have to take the initiative to keep every building and department of the university clean regularly. If everyone maintains the practice of keeping their respective workplaces and buildings clean on weekly holidays, the entire campus will take on a beautiful and healthy look.
At the event, the vice-chancellor called on various social organisations and students to come forward in the work of keeping the university clean, and expressed thanks and gratitude to the teachers, students, officers and employees who took part spontaneously in the initial stage.
It may be mentioned that the vice-chancellor has said this drive will continue with the aim of strengthening the destruction of Aedes mosquito larvae and cleanliness activities in all halls, academic buildings, administrative buildings, residential areas and surrounding open spaces of the university. Deans of various faculties, heads of departments, members of the proctorial body and officers, employees and students at various levels of the university were present at the event.
