The constitution can be changed to meet the needs of the times and reflect people’s aspirations, but only while keeping its basic foundation intact — this is the view of Prof Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, minister for women and children affairs and social welfare.
In his words, no state can be run on the basis of anger or resentment. A state runs on reason.
Gano Forum organised a discussion at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday to mark ‘Constitution Day of Bangladesh’. The minister made these remarks while speaking there as special guest.
Zahid Hossain said the people of this country never like excess; they have rejected those who went to excess. He also remarked that the people of this country never err in taking the right decision when the state needs it.
He claimed that the people backed and elected those who were in favour of amending the constitution.
The minister acknowledged that the country may have some limitations given its geographical and social realities. But he believes Bangladesh has set a rare example to the world in living together in harmony despite countless adversities.
He also called for building a just, safe and humane Bangladesh by upholding the true spirit of the Liberation War.
Dr Kamal Hossain, framer of Bangladesh’s constitution and founder of Gano Forum, was chief guest at the meeting. Those taking part in the discussion included MP Advocate Fazlur Rahman, Prof Dr Abu Sayeed, a member of the committee that drafted Bangladesh’s constitution, and Nagorik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna.
Gano Forum acting president Senior Advocate Subrata Chowdhury presided. Top leaders of various political parties, lawyers, intellectuals, family members of the constitution drafting committee’s members and people from different walks of life attended.
