Deciding which Iranian officials to contact for negotiations has now become difficult for the United States, according to US President Donald Trump. In his view, the US may have crossed a line in carrying out military strikes targeting Iran’s top leaders, and this has led to the complication.
Trump made the remarks on Monday (local time) while speaking at a campaign rally in the state of Ohio. He said that in targeting Iran’s leadership, the United States had probably gone a bit too far; as a result, it has become hard even to figure out who it should be talking to now.
Trump also remarked that deciding who the US will sit down for talks with has become quite complicated for the country. He said it seems to him that, in this regard, the United States may have gone further than was necessary.
Meanwhile, ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, the ruling Republican Party has come under pressure over its economic policies and the impact of the Iran war. Amid fears of losing control of Congress, President Trump is facing a major political challenge. To manage the situation, he has taken to the campaign trail even in areas known as the party’s strongholds.
As the midterm elections of Trump’s second term approach, the battle for control of Congress is growing fiercer by the day, and holding on to their majority is becoming increasingly difficult for the ruling Republicans. The latest national poll by Emerson College shows support for the Democrats at 53 percent, compared with 42 percent for the Republicans.
The same poll also found a relatively low rate of satisfaction with Trump’s performance. Only 39 percent of Americans said they were satisfied with his work, while 58 percent expressed dissatisfaction. Discontent among a section of voters over economic uncertainty, rising prices, tariff policy and the Iran war has further complicated the Republicans’ electoral calculations. Even in Texas and Ohio, known as the party’s strongholds, candidates are facing tough contests.
Against this backdrop, Trump has stepped up his campaigning. In Ohio, he is campaigning on behalf of Republican Senator Jon Husted. In addition, Republican leaders are active on the ground in key states, including Alaska, to secure victories for the party’s candidates.
In the election to be held on November 3, voting will take place for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate. Alongside this, voters in various states will also choose representatives for thousands of governor and local legislature posts. Beyond the two chambers of Congress, gubernatorial elections will be held in 36 US states, and voting will take place for 6,139 seats in state legislatures across various states.
According to political experts, if the Democrats can win just four seats in the House of Representatives and four in the Senate, the Republicans could lose full control of Congress.
