A large-scale cleanliness programme has begun in Gazipur from Saturday with the aim of tackling dengue and keeping the environment beautiful. The drive was conducted in the Shmashan Mandir, Shmashan Mor, Raj Shmashan bank and Chela Beel bank areas of the city through the combined efforts of the district administration and Gazipur City Corporation.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated this countrywide programme through video conference from the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the capital. In his inaugural speech, he mentioned that alongside government initiatives, the general public must also fulfil their own responsibilities to keep the country liveable and clean.
In continuation of this, around 600 to 700 people from various professions, including teachers and students, government officials and employees, and BNCC and scout members, took part in the drive conducted in Gazipur. With the help of local cleaners, they cleaned up the garbage that had been piled up for a long time on the bank of the Raj Shmashan and the bank of Chela Beel. Alongside this, breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquito were destroyed and steps were taken to raise awareness among people.
Taking part in the programme, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan told news agency BSS that all the waste piled up in every nook and corner of the district will be removed within the next three months. He warned that the persons concerned will have to face accountability if they fail to maintain cleanliness in educational institutions or other government and private offices.
Gazipur City Corporation Administrator Md Shawkat Hossain Sarkar took part in the drive with the officials and employees of his own institution. Also present were Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Israil Hawlader, Local Government Division Deputy Director Ahammad Hossain Bhuiyan and officials of different levels of the city and district.
Local people have received this initiative, conducted with a huge public gathering, very positively. They stressed being aware personally as well, alongside government steps, to build a clean and liveable Gazipur.
